Overview
Pricing has two independent parts: a platform plan for your organisation, and a subscription for each device you fit to a machine. This article covers the second part.
Device subscriptions are charged on every plan, including the free one. There is no device cap anywhere — what limits how many devices you run is simply what you choose to pay for.
Per-device rates
| Device | Subscription |
|---|---|
| GoTag | None — passive tags are never charged |
| Interlock | Monthly, per device |
| Tracker | Monthly, per device — coming, not on sale yet |
The Interlock's subscription covers the cloud platform behind the interlock; the Tracker's covers its cellular connection and the live tracking surface. Volume and special rates are available under a signed contract — see Payment Options and Contract Discounts, whose term discounts also apply to device subscriptions.
When billing starts and stops
A device bills from the moment it is commissioned — made live against a machine — until it is released. Not from the day you buy the hardware, and not from the day it's delivered:
- A device in the store room costs nothing. Buy ahead, commission when ready.
- Releasing a device stops its charge from the next billing period. A machine sold or retired stops costing you the moment its device is released.
- An Interlock and a Tracker on the same machine are two subscriptions — two devices doing two jobs.
Who gets charged for a hired-out machine
The subscription always bills the organisation that owns the device — never the organisation operating a hired-in machine.
Note
If you're a hire company, you carry the device subscription while a machine is out with a customer, and recover it in your hire rate. Your customer sees the machine and its compliance history, but never a device line on their invoice.
This is deliberate: the owner chose the hardware and holds the compliance obligation for it, so the cost sits with the owner rather than hopping between organisations every time a machine changes hands. See Cross-Org Equipment Rental.
How your quantity stays honest
You never manually maintain a device count for billing. Two mechanisms keep it accurate:
- Commissioning or releasing a device updates your billed quantity right away.
- A daily background reconcile re-checks every account as a backstop, so even a missed update self-corrects within 24 hours.
A sync that finds no difference does nothing — no spurious charges, no spurious credits. Mid-cycle changes are prorated on the invoice rather than billed as full months.
What is capped instead
Devices are uncapped; machines are capped on the free plan only. Plant Operator covers a small number of active machines (owned plus hired in); every paid plan removes the cap. See Plans Overview.
Edge cases
- Swapping a failed Interlock — release the old unit, commission the replacement: the charge follows the commissioned device, so a swap doesn't double-bill the machine.
- Seasonal fleets — releasing devices over the off-season and recommissioning in spring is legitimate and exactly what commission-to-release billing is for. Remember a released Interlock stops enforcing.
- Free-plan devices — a Plant Operator organisation pays device subscriptions like everyone else; the plan fee is what's free, not the device service.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Billed for a device you thought was gone | It was never released, only unplugged | Release it properly — see the machine's device section |
| Device line missing for a new unit | Commissioned mid-cycle | It appears prorated on the current or next invoice |
| Device charges on a hired-in machine's invoice | Shouldn't happen — the owner pays | Contact support with the invoice line |
| Quantity looked wrong briefly | Event missed; the daily reconcile self-corrects | If it persists past a day, contact support |
